Botox and dermal fillers are the world’s most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments, helping millions of men and women to turn back years in a matter of minutes. Whether you’re a seasoned injectable patient or considering injectables for the first time, the same rules apply for achieving optimal treatment and results.
Rule #1:
Reduce your risk of bruising.
A least two weeks before your injectable session, avoid aspirin and other blood-thinning substances, which reduce your blood’s clotting ability and increase your risk for bruising. Topical corticosteroids for eczema and the supplements fish oil and ginkgo can also increase bruising. One well-known supplement that you may want to add to your routine is arnica montana. There is evidence that this well-known herb may actually help to reduce bruising and swelling. If all else fails, don’t forget to ice! Applying ice to your injection sites immediately following your session can help to reduce the size of a developing bruise by decreasing the amount of blood leaking from broken capillaries. Ice also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Rule #2
Do no harm.
You’ve undergone your injectables session. Now what? Your job is to avoid altering your treatment. For example, avoid laying down or exercising immediately following your session. These activities can inadvertently move your injectables to undesired areas of your face. Laying down immediately after your session can also lead to more swelling. In the first few days following a dermal filler treatment, you may notice swelling. Avoid rubbing your treatment areas, which can worsen swelling by breaking up dermal filler particles while also irritating your injection sites.
Rule #3
Be patient.
Injectables are a safe and efficient anti-aging treatment that provide almost immediate benefits with minimal to no downtime. They aren’t magic, however. Some people do experience a few side effects. It takes time for dermal fillers or Botox to fully settle into your facial contours and take full effect. It also takes up to a week for any swelling to fully subside, revealing your true results. Some patients can take up to two full weeks to see optimal results, so don’t panic if you’re one of them. I will closely monitor your results as needed to ensure you achieve your goals. You can always do more to enhance your results, but it’s much harder to take it away.
