Don’t let the lack of snow or harsh winter weather fool you, winters in our area can still be harmful on our skin. Drier weather can strip skin of moisture, causing dry, flaky and tight skin on your face, hands and any other exposed areas. Want to fight back? We’ve got you covered with these skin care tips to get you through the season with softer, healthier skin:
#1: Avoid overbathing.
As the temperature gets a little colder, a long, hot bath may sound like a perfect evening, but it’s important for your skin health to keep it short and tepid. Shorter, milder baths and showers will be far kinder to your skin. Bathing with hot water, especially for a long period of time, can be harsh on skin, drying it out and stripping it of its moisture. In times of drier weather, make the switch. Your skin will be so grateful!
#2: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
We can’t repeat it enough. Moisturizing will be your best friend when protecting against dry skin. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing your hands, face or body no matter the temperature of the water. This will restore your skin’s natural protective oils that can be stripped when you wash your hands or bathe. To help avoid redness and irritation in the dry winter months, make sure you’re using the right moisturizer. Using a heavy ointment or cream instead of a lotion will help seal in hydration and coat your skin with a layer of protection.
#3: Modify your skin care routine.
Drier weather can treat your skin differently, so it’s important to be prepared with an adjusted skin care regimen. You and your skin may benefit from switching to less irritating products. Avoid using exfoliating products or skin care that contains any of the following ingredients: alcohol, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), retinoids and fragrances — these will dry out your skin. During your next visit to Belle Marin Aesthetic Medicine, we can help you find the moisturizer or skin replenishing product best suited for your skin from an array of medical-grade skin care products.
#4: Apply sunscreen daily.
We are no stranger to sunny skies this time of year. But no matter the temperature or cloud coverage, we always need to keep ourselves protected from the sun’s harmful UV light by applying sunscreen each and every day. UV light can cause stress to your skin’s moisture barrier, so to optimize your skin health and hydration, add a layer of broad-spectrum sunscreen to your daily skin care routine. As recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association, use at least SPF 30 for optimal protection. Applying sunscreen can also reduce your risk of developing skin cancer — it’s extremely important!
#5: Stay hydrated inside and out.
Did you know staying hydrated on the inside can do wonders for the appearance of your skin on the outside? Another great way to keep your skin healthy and protect it from dry weather is to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. If you’re dehydrated, your skin is more likely to dry out. Keep track of your daily water intake and set a routine for staying hydrated that works for you. You can also make modifications to your diet to protect your skin cells from the elements. Foods that are high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids are great for helping your body produce healthy skin cells.
