When you want age-defying results fast, nothing comes close to Juvéderm® and other FDA-approved dermal fillers. Packed with the plumping power of hyaluronic acid (HA), your skin’s natural moisture magnet, dermal fillers help to replenish lost volume and smooth skin for a years-younger look on your lunch hour.
To help you get the most out of your next treatment, here are a few FAQs to consider:
Will dermal fillers make me look fake?
The beauty of injectables is that they are infinitely versatile treatments designed to be personally tailored to your body’s unique contours and preferences. For example, if you are seeking dramatic results, we will administer a dermal filler with larger HA molecules, such as Juvéderm®, which is formulated to plump lips and rejuvenate areas around the mouth and nose, such as nasolabial folds and smile lines. If you are seeking more subtle rejuvenation, however, you may be better suited with Volbella®, a dermal filler specifically formulated with smaller HA molecules to provide more subtle lip enhancement. To help us clearly understand your aesthetic goals and vision, feel free to come into your consultation with photos of the looks you admire. Together, we can work to design an optimal injectables session that meets your goals with the highest level of comfort and ease.
Do I need to prepare in any way?
Dermal fillers are a well-tolerated treatment that help millions of people look years younger within minutes. However, with any injection, there is a risk for swelling, pinpoint bleeding, and bruising. You can reduce your risk for side effects, though we can’t guarantee that no side effects will occur (nor should any reputable medical practice). Here are a few tricks for reducing your risk for swelling and bruising:
- A week or two before your treatment (or, at the very least, the day of your treatment), avoid any blood thinning substances like alcohol, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), gingko, garlic, ginseng, and green tea.
- Ice your treatment areas in advance. The ice helps to shrink your blood vessels, reducing your risk for bruising and bleeding. Also, apply ice on and off after your treatment. Aside from icing, keep your hands off! The swelling will subside on its own in the days following your treatment.
- Relax! There’s no rushing a successful injectables session. While we like to say you can get dermal fillers and Botox on your lunch hour, it’s not our first choice for you. Injectables are an experience to be savored, not rushed.
What happens if I don’t like my dermal filler results?
Keep in mind that dermal fillers are successfully used by millions of people every year, so the odds are in your favor that you will be happy with your treatment. However, there are instances when you may need follow-up treatments to adjust your look. For example, you may wish to have more filler added because your results are too subtle. “You can always add more,” says Dr. Faye Jamali, medical director of Belle Marin Aesthetic Medicine, “but it’s much harder to take away.” In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your results, Dr. Jamali can inject your treatment areas with a special enzyme called hyaluronidase, which dissolves the filler and can also correct swelling.
